- Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta. As of 2008, over 1.08 million people call Metro Edmonton home. Over 20,000 of those are of Filipino descent.
- Economy: The economy is mostly driven by the oil and gas sector. However, Edmonton is also Canada’s second most diversified economy in Canada. Information technology, biotechnology and nanotechnology, logistics and distribution, education, research, and health industries have developed in the city in the past few years.
- Institutions and Attractions: Edmonton is home to several of Canada’s most prestigious post-secondary institutions, such as the University of Alberta, Macewan College, and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. It is also home to North America’s largest shopping centre - West Edmonton Mall. Edmonton also has the highest per capita area of parkland anywhere in Canada; the North Saskatchewan River valley is 22 times larger than New York’s Central Park.
- Culture: Known as “Festival City”, Edmonton boasts numerous cultural and civic festivals, including the Rexall Edmonton Indy, Capital Ex, and the Servus Heritage Festival. Sports is an important aspect of Edmonton life, with the city home to two professional sports teams (Oilers/NHL, Eskimos/CFL), and several junior league sports teams.
- Weather: Edmonton is known for extreme temperatures both in the winter and summer time. Average temperatures range from -11.7°c in January, to 17.5°c in July. However, temperatures can exceed 30°c in the summer, and drop below -30°c in the wintertime. Edmonton is also one of the sunniest cities in Canada, receiving about 2,300 hours of sunlight yeach year.
